In the late 1970s, Žbirka co-founded two Czechoslovak pop music bands Modus and Limit. He currently lives and works in Prague. In 1982, he received the annual Zlatý slavík award for the best male singer in Czechoslovakia. Fred Cusick died in his sleep on September 15, 2009 at his home in Barnstable, Massachusetts from complications of bladder cancer.
