Oryzomys are semiaquatic, spending much time in the water, and otherwise mainly live on the ground; both the marsh rice rat and O. couesi are known to be excellent swimmers and will flee into the water when disturbed. In a letter to Stasov (see photo, right), probably written on 12 June 1874, he describes his progress: My dear généralissime, Hartmann is boiling as Boris boiled—sounds and ideas hung in the air, I am gulping and overeating, and can barely manage to scribble them on paper.
