Rich Juzwiak of Stylus called Mariah’s version of the song epic. In the exception of AllMusic whom gave mixed reviews, stated that its best song on album but also noting that it isn’t even covered all that well.
Chicago Tribune editor Jan DeKnock called it upbeat and inspirational, while Mellisa A. Jacque from the St. Petersburg Times wrote Carey evokes a deep-felt strength and love for life, and the music has a jazzy feel in its sparsity.
An extended version was available on 12 vinyl, but the midtempo track did not see dance chart success. Coldplay, a band influenced by A-ha, has been known to perform Hunting High and Low in concert.
