He became a teacher of harmony, and later of composition, at Liverpool College of Music. At Liverpool he became close friends with the composer Cyril Scott, and through him was introduced to H. Balfour Gardiner, who became a lifelong friend.
In 2009, Willy rewrote the musical and updated to a more modern feeling. It premièred in the Royal Court Liverpool. The latest performance of the updated version, was performed outside Liverpool at the Key Theatre in Peterborough on the 15–18 August 2012.
