According to the traditional account, the original flag was made in June 1776, when a small committee including George Washington, Robert Morris and relative George Ross visited Betsy and discussed the need for a new American flag.
In 1858, the property was reoccupied as a way station (No. 54) on the Southern Overland Mail route, Butterfield Stagecoach, at the abandoned fort until 1861. Fort Phantom Hill was used again during the Civil War by the Confederacy’s Frontier Battalion, and after the Civil War, in 1871, it became a sub-post of Fort Griffin (near Albany, Texas) during the Indian campaigns.
Speed joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) as a lorry driver. However, her skills in German led to work as a code-breaker and translator at the Admiralty where she met Francis Crick in 1945. After the war, she finished her art studies at St. Martin’s in London.
