The construction of the line was done under the name of the Flushing and North Side Railroad, which was incorporated in 1868. This company had the right to build a line from Long Island City to Flushing and beyond to Roslyn, with a branch from Flushing to Whitestone.
The Houston Public Library operates the Kendall Neighborhood Library on Eldridge Parkway, about 1⁄8 mile south of Memorial Drive. This new facility opened in 2009, replacing a smaller building on Memorial Drive.

The basement collection showcases funerary art and practices beginning with articles dating back from prehistory until the Ottoman era. Collection highlights include 31 Phoenician anthropomorphic sarcophagi from the Ford collection, a fresco depicting Mary the mother of Jesus dated to A.D., and which is believed to be one the oldest discovered representation of Mary in the world.
