Rear Admiral Stewart was appointed Controller of the Navy on 29 April 1872, and held this post until 1 December 1881. During this time he was promoted to vice admiral (12 November 1876) and then admiral (23 November 1881). He was awarded the K.C.B. (Knight Commander of the Bath) on 2 June 1877.
The character was created by an unknown writer and penciler-inker John Romita Sr., who the following decade would become one of Spider-Man’s signature artists. The feature, drawn exclusively by Romita, ran through issue #17 (Aug. 1957), with cover art by Romita, Joe Maneely, John Severin, and, for one cover each, Carl Burgos, Russ Heath, and Syd Shores.

He was selected as one of Georgia Trend magazine’s 40 under 40 Rising Stars in 2001, one of 10 Outstanding Atlantans in Outstanding Atlanta, a member of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2000, and a Board Member of the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund. 2011, he received an honorary degree in Doctor of Laws from Oglethorpe University.
