He was a keen birdwatcher, making bicycle tours to the Firth of Thames in the 1940s, e.g. in 1942 with a group of students from King’s College. At Miranda, at the site of a then operating lime-works, he discovered a bird high-tide roost with bar-tailed godwits ( Limosa lapponica ), wrybills ( Anarhynchus frontalis ) and South Island pied oystercatchers ( Haematopus ostralegus ).
Stafford was reared in Amarillo, Texas, and graduated there in 1960 from Palo Duro High School. He then moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a musical career. The song Suspicion, which was released on the Crusader record label and had previously been recorded by Elvis Presley, made it to no. 3 in the U.S. and no. 31 in the UK Singles Chart.
At the 1945 general election, Chetwynd fought Stockton-on-Tees as the Labour Party candidate against the rising Conservative minister Harold Macmillan; in one of the first results to be declared, he won with a majority of 8,664.
He has also been named a University of Texas Distinguished Engineering Graduate, and in 2007 Truchard was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Truchard is a member and former chairman of the Engineering Foundation Advisory Council, and is a member of the University of Texas Chancellor’s Council.
