As part of the celebration, Ford formally dedicated Greenfield Village to his friend Thomas Edison, a man who once encouraged a young Henry Ford to pursue the creation of a gasoline powered automobile.

Walpurgis bonfires are part of a Swedish tradition dating back to the early 18th century. At Walpurgis (‘), farm animals were let out to graze and bonfires (’, ) lit to scare away predators. In Southern Sweden, an older tradition, no longer practiced, was for the younger people to collect greenery and branches from the woods at twilight.
The woods around the Zugspitze are home to red deer, red squirrel, weasel, capercaillie, hazel grouse and black grouse. On the glaciers live glacier fleas ( Desoria saltans ) and water bears. Three of Germany’s five glaciers are found on the Zugspitze massif: the Höllentalferner the Southern and Northern Schneeferner.
